Beautiful Diversity of Subjectivity
A fellow student at CIIS sent out a deeply heartfelt email that prompted me to spread its message further:
So I just wanted to share this song with the community in light of the prop 8 vote and subsequent movement in protest of its passing, and more broadly to make a sincere call for honoring and defending the diversity of subjectivity in the world.
A close friend of mine played me this cover of a Leonard Cohen song called "If it be your will" by the artist Antony, of Antony and the Johnsons, the night before the big protest at city hall over the weekend against the passing of Prop 8. I am not sure how Antony identifies vis a vis his/her/other sexuality and gender but in most biographies I have read of him (pronoun?) on the internet — his (pr?) status as a trans individual is referenced.
The song's lyrics pierced me to my core. My experience of this song is that it is a call to all people who can hear it to honor the diversity of authentic subjectivity that exists in the world. It is a call to see the world differently — as it is rather than as we have been taught. It is a call to come back to one's self and see the world as a multiplicity of subjectivity again — to see fellow beings as valuable and beautiful beyond measure simply by virtue of their unique existence.
Watching Antony sing this song moved me to tears for reasons that should be obvious given the lyrics of the song (a trans individual calling out to be heard, to be seen). I guess I am in a place too at the moment where I am coming back to honoring my own voice, my own divine subjectivity, and I want my song to be heard, and in turn want the songs of other beings to be heard as well. Coming back to this center within is an amazing thing for if we are in contact there, the burried beauty of the world is seen readily, easily even, and we just want to call it forward into existence. So much possibility there if we can only move towards manifesting more of our authentic selves.
So touch that heart of yours, and honor your unique, and naturally beautiful core. Remember your voice, and sing your song to me, to the world — the world is dying and needs desperately for you to be you.
I am an aspiring ally for the diversity of subjectivity.
Love to all my fellow birds/beings,

The Guests (Leonard Cohen cover) speaks this message even more clearly:
